Preparation for the 2014 Huskie football season reached a fever pitch this morning as the team began training camp. About 100 players are taking part in this year’s training camp which will last until the team scrimmage next Friday. The Huskies open the CanadaWest season at home against the Manitoba Bisons on Sept 5. It was a cool, overcast day with a strong breeze to begin training camp. The Huskies have had a few changes to the coaching staff and you could really see a difference in this practice when comparing to the past few years. After spending five straight weeks at No. 1, the Laval Rouge et Or were dethroned by the high-flying Western Mustangs in the sixth Football Reporters of Canada poll of the campaign. Huskie Football is looking for an film assistant for the upcoming 2013 season (and future). The film assistant works with the film department and coaches to film practices and break down game film. The film assistant has to be at three practices a week (from 5pm to 7pm, usually Monday to Wednesday). You can put in more time if you would like. Two years ago, Charlie Power was battling for a spot as a reserve linebacker for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. By the end of that season, Power was a major contributor to the Huskies defense and special teams. After the 2011 season, the coaches moved Power, who is 6’ 3” and 235lbs, to inside receiver. He then spent last season climbing the depth chart before becoming a major contributor, this time on offense and special teams. The Huskies now have three training camp practices in the books. It has been a very hot few days in Saskatoon, with temperatures over 30 degrees celsius at each practice. Due to the hot weather, the team is taking a bit more time for water breaks and making sure all of the players stay hydrated. Huskies Head Coach Brian Towriss seemed pretty happy after this morning’s workout. “The tempo remains good, even in this heat,” he said. “We are practicing smarter and reducing mistakes which is good. Huskies training camp is now in full swing as the team completed their first practice of the fall season this morning. “It was a solid first practice,” said Huskies Head Coach Brian Towriss. “We had a good tempo and guys worked really hard. They hustled around, so I am pleased.” “One thing that I told them after practice is that we need get better at getting from drill to drill,” he added. “We want to establish good habits early on, over the first few days.
