Huskies announce game themes

The Huskie football program continues to lead the CIS with the best game day experience in the country. This year, the Huskies will be improving the game day presentation and expanding on some traditions.

While there will still be many surprises at the games, the Huskies have announced the game themes.

The Huskies will kick off the CIS schedule with the Support our Troops game on Aug 31.

Friday, August 24 vs the Guelph Gryphons will see the Huskies host the only national non-conference game in the country. The team has adopted a slogan this season, which will be reflected in the game theme: Earn Everything. For the first time that anyone involved in the Huskie program can remember, the Huskies will be wearing their all green uniforms.

The game kicks off at 7:00 with a pre-game BBQ for all fans beginning at 5:00pm in the field right beside the stadium. There will be a live band and great food, so everyone is encouraged to come out early.

The Huskies kick off their CanadaWest Schedule on Friday, August 31 with their second ever Support our Troops Night. The Huskies host the Alberta Golden Bears while recognizing the effort that the men and women in Canada’s Armed Forces have done to protect our freedom. If you were at the game last season, you would have noticed all of the military personnel in the stadium. It will expand this year.

Once again, their will be a pre-game BBQ beginning at 5:00 on the field beside the stadium. Military personnel and their families will receive vouchers for a meal. The public is invited to buy burgers, hotdogs and drinks with all proceeds going to the Soldier On Fund. The entire Huskie Football organization encourages people to make a donation to this fund at the game.

The Huskies hit the road for a few weeks but are back for the Homecoming Game on Friday, September 21 against their provincial rivals, the Regina Rams. The Huskies have dominated the Rams since the Rams joined CIS and a sold-out crowd is sure to witness this game. The Homecoming game features the annual running of the togas, what has become a can’t miss event in CanadaWest.

The annual Blackout Game, where the Huskies wear their black uniforms is on Friday, October 12 against the Manitoba Bisons. The team intro for this game is one of the hilights of the season. The lights go out before the intros and the players enter the stadium to a sea of green lights. It’s like going to a stadium rock concert, but even better as a football game follows. Their may be a few new wrinkles at this game so fans are encouraged to be in their seats at 6:45 so they do not miss out on the fireworks.

The final conference game of the season is on Friday, October 26 as the Huskies host the UBC Thunderbirds, the team that knocked the Huskies out of the playoffs last year. This will be the Fifth-Year game where the Fifth Year Huskies will receive a special introduction and be greeted by past fifth year players. It is always fun to see some of the “old guard” back in their jerseys and on the field to welcome a few new players to their club.
