Drew Burko spent the 2011 season on the show team, and is now penciled in as the starting quarterback for the 2012 season. He spent a lot of time throwing to some of his receivers, during the summertime, in preparation for fall camp. “Things are progressing fairly well. Camp is a lot different that just coming out and throwing in the summer, but the summer sessions did help.” Quarterback is a very complex position to play, and Drew knows that his role requires hard work and dedication. “I’m getting more comfortable. At the start I was a little shaky in the team stuff, but I’m getting better each day. I need to keep progressing – I don’t want to take steps backwards.”
Observers have noticed that Drew is throwing a tighter spiral than he did last year, the result of reverting to a way he gripped the ball in years past. “I made a grip change last spring. I kept that grip throughout last season and it wasn’t really working for me. I switched back to my original grip, following winter workouts, and I’ve found my spiral again and I’m throwing it a lot better.”
Drew was asked how the offence was performing as a group. “I think we’re doing fairly well. We face an awesome defense, and it’s tough going against those guys, but we’re getting better each day.”
Drew didn’t appear in last season’s non-conference game, so he will make his first CIS appearance on Friday, against Guelph. “I’m getting very excited – I can’t wait for it. ”
