Huskie holiday traditions part 2

Today is the second in a two-part series that takes a look at the holiday season for some of the Huskie Football players. We asked a few players to answer some questions on Christmas past and the upcoming holiday season.

Bryce McCall, safety
What was the best gift you received as a child?
My brother and I received a race car track from my auntie and uncle that had a bunch of loops and went up the wall across and back down, we played with it for years. It was unreal!
What is your favourite holiday tradition?
My favourite holiday tradition is Steak and Lobster at my grandma and grandpa’s place in Regina. It’s the one time a year when I get lobster and I love sea food. So it hits the spot after a long first semester!
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
I’m most looking forward to seeing my family and spending some good quality time with them. Relax and set goals and schedules for the 2nd semester.

Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren, quarterback
What was the best gift you received as a child?
Probably when I got my first Gameboy Colour and Pokemon Yellow. I was glued to that thing for the next month!
What is your favourite holiday tradition?
My favourite holiday tradition would have to be watching Christmas movies with my mom when I was little.
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
Spending the holidays in Trinidad with my Grandmother and uncle.

Owen Geier, slotback
What was the best gift you received as a child?
The best gift I received as a child would have to be my Schwinn bike when I was about eight years old. It was hot pink that faded into black. So many miles were logged on that sick ride.
What is your favourite holiday tradition?
The best tradition is probably the schnitzel dinner either at my uncle’s house or ours. Another awesome tradition is to open all the presents before the ski hill opens, then eat a quick family breakfast and head up for a great day on the hill with no people and no lines.
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
I’m looking forward to visiting with all my family and friends as well as sleeping in as much as possible. Oh and can’t forget Momma G’s awesome baked Christmas goods!

Rylund Hunter, linebacker
What was the best gift you received as a child?
The gift that I most remember was a basketball net.
What is your favourite holiday tradition?
Airing of grievances and feats of strength based on Festivus.
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
Seeing my sisters visit from Montreal and on Saturday delivering the Christmas hampers our football team donated money for, to two needy families in the city so their Christmas can be as blessed as ours all are.

Tony Mikalchuk, linebacker
What was the best gift you received as a child?
Way back in 95 I received what every eight year old boy wanted…a Brett Hull GT. The GT and I dominated the slopes of Saskatchewan for years. Many great memories using that torpedo flying down the hill.
What is your favourite holiday tradition?
Every year we go to Christmas at my Baba’s house in Manitoba. After gifts are opened Christmas morning we collect all the empty boxes and wrapping paper and go burn garbage (just this one time we don’t recycle). As we burn garbage we always take a bottle of Ukrainian Water and keep warm while burning garbage.
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
This Holiday season I look forward most to spending time with my family, I have a new niece and a little nephew and its always a blast visiting with my family. I am just gonna kick back and relax, not having a worry in the world. Holiday season is the best season!
