Huskie holiday traditions, part 1

Today is the first in a two-part series that takes a look at the holiday season for some of the Huskie Footballers. We asked a few players to answer some questions on Christmas past and the upcoming holiday season. Check back tomorrow to read more from our second set of players.

Jade Etienne, receiver
What was the best gift you received as a child?
My mom said I freaked out about everything! I’m gonna have to say its a tie between the Xbox game “Halo” and my first snowboard.
What is your favourite holiday tradition?
It’s pretty typical at our house. But the little traditions we usually dabble in are things like starting and (sometimes) finishing a huge puzzle. We always cook Tourtiere on Christmas Eve too. Its basically a meat pie, Quebec style. Not a word of a lie, my Grandpa made it taste like gold! Another one is we go to Fernie too because my aunt and uncle own an amazing cabin out there. Going there is what I look forward to ALOT every year. Getting to tear up the hills with my cousins Luke and Cole.
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
Honestly, just getting home! It is an eight-ish hour drive there, so its going to be nice to just get home and relax. Not think about school or anything else! Just being with family is going to be great!

Jeff Hassler, running back
What was the best gift you received as a child?
My favorite gift was a nintendo 64. I was about 10 years old when we got it and when video games were starting to become a fad with my friends and I. My parents told me there was no way we could get it because it was just too much money, but when I opened my present from Santa there it was. Along with my favorite classic Super Smash Bro’s.
What is your favourite holiday tradition?
My favourite holiday tradition would be to sit around Christmas morning with my family going through our stocking stuffers and each opening up a present one at a time.
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
Most looking forward to being out of my sling and visiting my family. (Note: Jeff had offseason shoulder surgery and has been wearing a sling for about six weeks. He will be ready for the 2011 season).

Stephen Kovach, defensive tackle
What was the best gift you received as a child?
A signed Trevor Kidd picture with the message: “Merry Christmas Stephen, all my best -Trevor Kidd”. I was five when I got it and it still hangs over my bed.
What is your favourite holiday tradition?
Going swimming on Christmas eve at my grandparents farm.
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
Being able to spend some time with my family.

Dane Bishop, linebacker
What was the best gift you received as a child?
My favorite present as a kid probably has to be my GT racer. I got it when I was eight and still have it. Works just like new haha!
What is your favourite holiday tradition?
My favorite tradition is opening the token PJ’s on christmas eve. Don’t really get PJ’s anymore but that is still my favorite tradition.
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
I’m really looking forward to seeing all my family this christmas. They all live in the Calgary area so it’s hard to see them but when the time comes it’s a real treat.

Paddy Neufeld, Offensive tackle
What was the best gift you received as a child?
The best gift I received as a child was a Sega Genesis. It was my first gaming console and I was hooked on Sonic the Hedgehog comics as a kid, so the Sega let me play Sonic instead of reading it.
What is your favourite holiday tradition?
I have two traditions. The first is watching the Festivus episode of Seinfeld on the actual day of Festivus (December 23rd) with my brother. Secondl is our family’s annual ski trip to Fernie. We go for 5-7 days usually with our best friends and have a blast snowboarding all day and then a couple drinks in the evening.
What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
I’m really looking forward to this holiday season because all of my family is coming home to Regina on both sides of my family. Aunts and uncles from Ireland, Atlanta and New York as well as Calgary will be making the trek back home and I cannot wait to see all of them.
