Prior to each home game, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team honours its alumni at Champions Plaza. There is a flag commemorating each of the Huskies three Vanier Cup Victories: 1990, 1996 and 1998. There is also one flag to recognize all of the Huskies Hardy Cup victories and one each for the Churchill and Uteck Bowl Victories from various seasons.
Before each kick-off, a Huskies Football Alumni will raise the seventh flag, known as the Alumni Flag.
During the ceremony on Friday, September 11 against the Regina rams, 6090 fans rose to their feet and cheered in unison as the flag was raised.
Third Honoree (Sept 11, 2009)
The Huskies during the seventies were coached by Al Ledingham, Bob Laycoe, and Bob Brennan, but it was the beginning of the Val Schneider era of Huskie Football as he coached 6 years of that decade and led the team to their only Hardy Cup victory of the 70’s in 1974. Raising the ‘70’s flag are two Huskie Alumni’s whose playing careers overlapped and so they shared time together as teammates. Rick Wakeman played Defensive End for the Huskies from 1970 – 1973. Barry Radcliffe played Running Back and Place Kicker from 1969 – 1971 Both of these Alumni went on to serve the program as coaches, each devoting 20 years to the team and winning 3 Vanier Cups in the process.
On September 11, we honored the Alumni from the 1970’s and two very special Alums representing that decade, Mr Rick Wakeman and Mr. Barry Radcliffe.
