Prior to each home game, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team honours its alumni at Champions Plaza. There is a flag commemorating each of the Huskies three Vanier Cup Victories: 1990, 1996 and 1998. There is also one flag to recognize all of the Huskies Hardy Cup victories and one each for the Churchill and Uteck Bowl Victories from various seasons.
Before each kick-off, a Huskies Football Alumni will raise the seventh flag, known as the Alumni Flag.
During the ceremony on Friday, September 4 against the Calgary Dinos, 6040 fans rose to their feet and cheered in unison as the flag was raised.
Second Honoree (Sept 4, 2009)
Beginning in 1912 Huskie Football has been a great tradition at the U of S. But for nine long years in the 1950’s the field was empty and the fans were silent. Football was on hiatus and the University of Saskatchewan was missing one of its finest traditions. In 1959 a brave group of young men led by Dr. Howard Nixon as Head Coach breathed life back into a football program ignored, but never forgotten. With no college football experience this Band of Brothers played a ten game season against the best Football Teams the West had to offer. Their record that season is less important than the legacy that they left. Every Huskie Football Player since 1959 owes a debt of gratitude to these trailblazers whose initiative and fortitude helped revive a dormant program and set it on a path to greatness. On Sept 4, 2009 the Huskies and Huskies fans honoured the Dogs of ‘59 and thanked them for the re-birth of U of S Huskie Football.
